The fortress stands on a promontory not far from Capo Carbonara, located at the eastern end of the Gulf of Cagliari. It is a complex structure built to defend against barbarian incursions, whose first polygonal nucleus was probably built in the Aragonese age. The exhibition area is set up outdoors, with a permanent exhibition “Enemigos de la Fe, Pirates and Coastal Defenders”, which illustrates the history of the Turkish-Barbary incursions on the Sardinian coast between the 16th and 19th centuries. The exhibition is divided into thematic areas: historical chronicles of piracy in ancient times; the Byzantine and Judicial period; the Arabs in Sardinia; the four moors and the structure of the coastal towers. In Spanish times, the building was incorporated by a structure with four towers, three of which were pointed in shape, a typical element of seventeenth-century architecture. A wall with two entrances and an internal square was connected to the complex. Eighteenth-century documents testify that the fortress was guarded by a mayor, an gunner and three soldiers and equipped with two cannons, a shotgun and three rifles.
