Villaperuccio, Menhir of Monte Narcao and Terrazzu

Villaperuccio, Menhir of Monte Narcao and Terrazzu

In the territory of Villaperuccio, in addition to those of Monte Narcao and Terrazzu, other menhirs are known: in the localities of Is Pedras Crocadas, Is Pireddas, Is Melonis, Bacc'e Fraus and between the towns of Is Faddas and Is Cotzas.
The menhir of Monte Narcao, about 6 m high, has an ovival section with rounded corners.
The menhir of Terrazzu, called 'Luxia Arrabiosa', although mutilated by lightning at the upper end, is the largest and the most impressive. The monolith, with its main face exposed to SE, has a trapezoidal cross section with rounded corners.
The menhirs of the territory of Villaperuccio are made of trachyte or granite. Sometimes they are useless and with abraded surfaces, and they rarely occupy their original position. Although in some of them there is a tendency to flatten the main face and to thin the upper end, they are aniconic, that is, they do not have elements that recall the human figure.
They generally have a parallelepiped shape, sometimes tending to a conical one with a subtrapezoidal or subelliptical cross section.
The menhirs, expressions of a cult linked to the fertility of the earth, are located between the Neolithic and the Eneolithic.

History of studies
The menhirs are reported in the main studies on the territory of Villaperuccio.

How to get there
The hamlet of Terrazzu is located just south of the town of Villaperuccio. The Luxia Arrabiosa menhir is located on a farm bordering Via Santa Lucia, on the west edge of the settlement of Terrazzu, coming from Villaperuccio.
