The church of San Giacomo di Taniga is on the site of the ancient settlement of Tanecle, in the town of San Camillo-Taniga, where the Cassino church of Santa Maria, dating back to the twelfth century, stood.
In the absence of documentary evidence, the construction of the Gothic-Italian church of San Giacomo dates back to around the middle of the 14th century.
The building, entirely made of limestone, has a single room with a wooden roof and a square apse, facing a cross and oriented to the east. The church stands on a shaped base and is strengthened by corner pillows, on which zoomorphic gargoyles still rest.
Along the terminals of the flanks, as well as of the apse, pointed arches run, internally three-lobed, on legs sculpted with various decorations, from human faces to animal heads.
The façade, without the upper part, has an arched portal with an ogival exhaust arch and a single-pointed window.
On the N side, buildings have been placed that partly hide the original wall wall; along the S side, an arched portal and three large single-light windows, with a pointed end and internally three-lobed, with “crochet” capitals and a shaped frame, open up. The apse window is the result of a renovation.
History of studies
The church of San Giacomo di Taniga was placed in the first quarter of the 14th century by Raffaello Delogu (1953). This date has been generally accepted by subsequent studies, starting with Vico Mossa (1965, 1983) and arriving at Roberto Coroneo's card (1993).
