The underground village includes a series of Punic tombs built between the end of the 6th and the end of the 3rd century BC and adapted as a home later by the poorest classes in the country, they are known as Is Gruttas.
Following the discovery of the remains of Sant'Antioco under the Basilica dedicated to him, which took place in 1615, the Bishop tried to put an end to the long abandonment of the island due to the continuous incursions of Barbary pirates. Thus, recalled by the land concessions promised by the church, there were many families who began a new life on the island, followed by many others who, despite obtaining nothing in exchange for their courageous return, adapted to this life of misery, poverty and marginalization.
In the first decades, a provisional adaptation was certainly attempted, which was then transformed into a stable one. In the area known until 1998 under the name of “Sa arruga de is gruttas”, there were many families that lived in the district until the beginning of the '70s.
Some burial chambers are currently set up with artifacts obtained from the intertwining of the dwarf palm tree and with various objects, used by those who have lived there. Recently renovated, they offer the visitor a glimpse of past life.
