PNRR Rural Architecture: from north to south here are the latest reopenings to the public of some iconic country churches

With the recent reopening for worship of the church of Saint Lucia in Arixi, returned to the community after an important restoration that involved the architectural structures and apparatus, the community of Senorbì was able to celebrate in the best way on 13 December the festival dedicated to the Saint, one of the most heartfelt in Southern Sardinia.

A similar intervention was carried out in Nuoro, where the church of Our Lady of Valverde mentioned in the works of Grazia Deledda, has returned to its former glory thanks to restoration works that have respected the original characteristics of the building, while improving its safety and usability.

Finally, slightly further north, the restoration of the church of San Nicola di Biduvè, in the territory of Pattada, took place last month. The building, the last testimony of the ancient medieval village, was the subject of an articulated intervention that involved the reconstruction of the roof, the recovery of the internal and external plaster and the adaptation of the lighting and

heating systems.

These interventions are in addition to the other interventions already completed or in the process of being concluded, funded thanks to the PNRR project -M1C3- Culture 4.0 - Measure 2 Investment 2.2: “Protection and Enhancement of Architecture and Rural Landscape coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and implemented by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia through the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, Information, Entertainment and Sports and the staff of the Valorization and Management of Cultural Heritage Service.

An investment in heritage and communities

The program includes interventions aimed at the recovery and efficiency of 229 assets, including country churches, cumbessias and muristenes, farmhouses, rural houses characteristic of the various historic regions of Sardinia such as the medaus, cuiles, furradroxius, stazzi and valuable artifacts such as bacilli located in the countryside. The Region of Sardinia plays a central role in managing funding, coordinating interventions and monitoring the progress of work, in collaboration with the dioceses and private entities that own the assets

The PNRR Rural Architecture project is part of a broader vision of the enhancement of cultural heritage as a lever for sustainable development, social cohesion and promotion of internal territories. Through the recovery of assets located in rural settings and little known to citizens and tourists, the Region of Sardinia helps to strengthen the cultural attractiveness of the island and to transmit to future generations a fundamental part of our culture, preserving the landscape and the small great stories of individual

communities.
