Discovered in 1832, Rosas was recognized as a mining area in 1849 and obtained in 1851 from King Vittorio Emanuele II the concession for the extraction of galena as an Anonymous Company of the Sulcis and Sarrabus Mining Union. Lead, zinc and iron were extracted from its galleries. It remained active until 1980 when it was permanently closed.
The complex of buildings and mining structures has been recovered and restored for museum and hospitality purposes, giving life to the Museum - Mining Village of Rosas, today among the assets protected by UNESCO and a large open-air museum immersed in an environmental context of absolute naturalistic value.
The laveria is the real beating heart of the mine, where it is possible to admire the large mills for processing the mineral in perfect working order. On the upper floor of the same building, the multimedia rooms with screens and “wells” retrace the Sardinian mining epic and, in particular, the history and events of Rosas and the Narcao mines told by the voice of the protagonists, the old miners.
Another exhibition space opens in the large square in the center of the village. Inside, among illustrative panels, documents and work equipment, you can retrace the events of Rosas, from the moment of his discovery to his decline, to his rebirth as a great museum and naturalistic compendium. The Santa Barbara gallery can also be visited, where it is possible to observe the systems and working conditions inside a lead and zinc mine. It is also possible to admire the former post office and business center (now a restaurant), the calcination kiln, the storage depots (now a museum exhibition), the blacksmith's forge (now a bar), the guesthouse and the miners' quarters. The latter, renovated, are today a particular example of holiday homes where you can spend relaxing stays immersed in a historic and natural context of particular value.
Why it's important to visit it
The visit opens a window on the history of one of the most important lead and zinc mines in Sardinia and, above all, on the life of a community closely linked to hard work in the gallery.
