Mamoiada, Museum of Mediterranean Masks

Mamoiada, Museum of Mediterranean Masks

Mamoiada, Museum of Mediterranean Masks

The Museum of Mediterranean Masks is based in Mamoiada, a jewel of history and culture located north of the Gennargentu massif, just over 15 km from the town of Nuoro. Not far from Orgosolo, a center famous for its murals, Mamoiada owes part of its charm to an enviable geographical position, characterized by an average altitude of 650 meters above sea level.
Today Mamoiada has just under two thousand five hundred inhabitants and its fame is mainly due to the suggestive tradition of its Carnival, one of the oldest popular festivals on the island, in which Mamuthones and Issohadores are the main protagonists.
The carnival culture in the Mediterranean is based on a dense network of common suggestions and inspirations shared by the seemingly most geographically and culturally distant areas. From this awareness and the desire to offer an interactive and engaging experience, the comparative exhibition that is the heart of the Mamoiada Museum of Mediterranean Masks was born. The visit to the museum begins with a suggestion. A sequence of images, accompanied by texts, music and sounds, introduces the visitor to the traditions of Mamoiada and its Carnival. A way of telling the origins and meaning of the Mamuthones and Issohadores, as well as the numerous theories that have tried over time to reconstruct their origins. Crossing the Barbaric Carnival Hall, where some of the most important masks of central Sardinia are exhibited, the visitor is taken to the Mediterranean. Here, in a section that distinguishes between the Alps, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula, the images that tell the story of the Carnival are presented. There is only one common thread: the common roots of the carnival traditions in the Mediterranean.

Why it is important to visit it
The guided tour allows you to deepen your knowledge of the traditions, history and cultural identity of Sardinia and in particular of Mamoiada. The affinities with other cultures of the Mediterranean are discovered. The highlight of the museum collection is the oldest “Mamuthone” mask, believed to date back to the early 19th century.
