Mamoiada, Museum of Mediterranean Masks

The Museum of Mediterranean Masks has its home in Mamoiada, a jewel of history and culture north of the Gennargentu Massif, just over 15 km from the city of Nuoro. Not far from Orgosolo, a center known for its wall painting, Mamoiada owes part of its charm to an enviable geographical position, standing out thanks to its average altitude of 650 meters above sea level.
Today Mamoiada has just under two thousand five hundred inhabitants, and its fame is mainly due to the suggestive tradition of its Carnival. This is one of the oldest popular celebrations on the island, and it has Mamuthones and Issohadores as protagonists.
The carnival culture of the Mediterranean region is built on a dense network of common suggestions and inspirations, shared by the apparently most distant areas, geographically and culturally. From this awareness, and from the desire to offer an interactive and engaging experience, the comparative exhibition that is the heart of the Mamoiada Museum of Mediterranean Masks was born. The visit to the museum begins with a suggestion. A sequence of images, accompanied by texts, music and sounds, introduces the visitor to the traditions of Mamoiada and its Carnival. A way of recounting the origins and meaning of the Mamuthones and the Issohadores, and the numerous theories that over time have tried to reconstruct their origins. Passing through the Barbarian Carnival Room, where some of the most important masks in central Sardinia are on display, the visitor is led to the Mediterranean Room. Here, in a division that distinguishes between the Alps, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula, the images that tell the story of the carnivals are presented. There is only one common thread: the common roots between the carnival traditions of the Mediterranean area.

Why it is important to visit it
The guided tour allows you to deepen your knowledge of the traditions, history and cultural identity of Sardinia and in particular of Mamoiada. The affinities with other cultures of the Mediterranean area are discovered. The highlight of the museum collection is the oldest 'Mamuthone' mask, which is thought to date back to the early 19th century.
