There are different forms of singing: tenor, cuncordu, guitar, defined not only on the basis of the technical methods of performance, but also on the basis of the territorial context to which they belong.
Tenor singing is an original form of oral polyphonic singing created by four male voices with a vertical harmonic structure in agreement (with intervals of third, fifth and octave).
In some Montiferru villages (Santu Lusgiu, Cuglieri) the expression canto a cuncordu defines the practice of singing in several voices traditionally linked to lay brotherhoods. Even if improperly, in recent years the expression has been used to indicate as a whole the four-part repertoires on a predominantly religious topic, often with a Latin text of ecclesiastical origin (and mostly for parapiturgical use) spread throughout the island (in particular in the central-northern part), thus distinguishing them from tenor singing.
The practice of solo singing accompanied by guitar is widespread throughout Sardinia and is divided into different types. The most important is undoubtedly the one commonly defined as guitar singing (or “boghe a sa chitera, boghe a sa chitarrina” and so on) which seems to have taken place of election in the Logudoro and today is practically present throughout the center-north of the island.
