Carloforte, Casa del Duca Civic Museum

Carloforte, Casa del Duca Civic Museum

Carloforte, Casa del Duca Civic Museum

The museum is located inside the eighteenth-century Carlo Emanuele III fort, built in the spring of 1738, the first masonry building in the then nascent town of Carloforte. Built in the center of a natural acropolis and designed as a guard body, over time it was used as a Mandatory Prison.
The fort has been completely restored to house the museum, which currently includes six rooms and a garden. The Tonnara Room contains finds and tools related to tuna fishing, a model of tuna trap, built by an old rai, which clearly depicts the draft, that is, the set of anchors and nets that form a gigantic rectangular structure that goes from the bottom of the sea to the surface. A scale model of the nineteenth-century Portopaglia plant is also on display, which faithfully reproduces the various phases of tuna processing and conservation. In the Galanzieri Room there are a series of historical documents on boatmen, or galanzieri, and the main tools used during navigation and for the collection and transport of mineral with sailboats. The Document Room, on the other hand, contains historical documents from the first years of the colonization of the island of San Pietro. The content of the Malacology Room is very interesting, which includes an interesting and extensive collection of Mediterranean shells, in particular from the south-western Tyrrhenian Sea. The itinerary ends with the Hall of Peasant Activities with finds and tools typical of rural life and the Emanuelli Room, which exhibits the collection of paintings by the artist Mario Emanuelli. Inside the museum structure there is also a garden with typical plants of the Mediterranean scrub.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum is unique in its kind, as it allows the visitor to learn about the history of the colonization of the island of San Pietro, with particular reference to specific works from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The most important pieces in the collection, in addition to the tonnara model, are a collection of historical documents such as the sketch of the island of San Pietro drawn by Agostino Tagliafico, the plan of the first urban nucleus of Carloforte drawn by the engineer Augusto De La Vallé and the copy of the oath of fidelity taken in the church of Portoscuso on 24 May 1738.
