The building is located in the historic district of Castello, between Palazzo Amat and Palazzo delle Seziate.
The former Royal Museum is now home to the management offices of the Archaeological Museum and hosts events and events.
The building has a neoclassical façade with a horizontal crown resting on a toothed frame decorated with festoons.
Formerly home to the National Archaeological Museum (now in the premises of the nearby Citadel of Museums), it is located in the area where the women's prisons used to be. Until the early twentieth century, the building housed the mint and the armory; between 1904 and 1906 it was adapted for its current function by the engineer Dionigi Scano who oversaw the transfer of the collections from Palazzo Vivanet (in Via Roma).
The first nucleus of the museum originated from a private cabinet of antiquities and natural history, created in 1802 by Carlo Felice in the royal palace. From here, the collections passed to the university in 1806 and were enriched by donations from G. B. Garau (for the medal table) and G. Meloni. Several directors succeeded each other, who enriched the museum with private collections and material from archaeological excavations in various parts of the island.
