The archaeological area is located in a granite area of the Buddusò plateau, in northeastern Sardinia.
The Loelle is a complex mixed-type nuraghe - characterized by the presence of elements typical of corridor nuraghi and “tholos” nuraghi - consisting of a central tower to which a three-lobed bastion is placed.
Around the building there is a vast settlement of circular huts, while a short distance away there are two tombs of giants. Furthermore, there is news of the ancient existence of a well of which no trace remains today.
The monument is built, at different levels, on a granite outcrop whose shape it exploits: the wall structures, built with large blocks just sketched and arranged in mostly regular rows, incorporate at different points the ruggedness of the rock overhang.
The main tower, built on top of the outcrop, has a circular plan (diam. m 9.50/7.20; height. m 2.10). It is accessed through an entrance (width). m 0.80; height. m 2.14), oriented to SE with a sharp back, strombato (long. cm 5.30; width. m 1.00/1.50/1.10) and in the open air, on the walls of which the facing entrances to the niche, to d., and of the staircase, e.g. the trapezoidal niche (prof. m 1.80;
width. m 1.10/0.50) is currently in the open sky, while the walking scale (length. cm 2.85; width. m 1.00) stops almost immediately due to the collapse.
The entrance entrance leads into the central chamber with a circular plan (diam. m 3.50) on which two niches open: the first, a d., has a rectangular plan (prof. m 1.80; width. m 0.70), while the second (width. 1.10 m), on the same axis as the entrance, has the back wall consisting of the granite outcrop.
In front of the main tower, a bastion is built - with concave-convex curtains - crossed by corridors connected by stairs.
The entrance to the adjoining body, open on the forehead in a decentralized position, leads into the staircase (length). cm 4.20; width. 1.00 m) which, with a curvilinear development, leads to the entrance of the tower and which - descending for a short distance - leads to a long corridor, parallel to the external development of the bastion. This connecting compartment leads to two semi-elliptical compartments made on different planes.
An additional space facing tholos (diam. m 2.85; height m 3.20), independent, is spared on the E side, using a ravine of the rock outcrop.
History of excavations
In the early nineties of the twentieth century, the nuraghe was excavated by Paola Basoli on behalf of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Sassari and Nuoro.
