In front of the parish church, a narrow staircase leads to an old and massive 17th century building used, until the forties of the last century, as a maximum security prison.
In 1793, some French officers were held captive, captured during a landing attempt by Napoleon.
The building, made of schist stone, mud and chestnut wood, is characterized by a sharp underpass, of Spanish origin, called 'sa bovida' (the vault).
The interiors, now completely renovated, include four rooms that were formerly used as a surveillance station and as women's and men's cells. One of these rooms has no opening to the walls, so much so that in recent times a door has been added to allow its use. In the inner courtyard there is an ancient sundial.
The exhibition itinerary develops in various environments and includes the setting up of a permanent exhibition entitled “Bruxas”, dedicated to magic and witchcraft in Sardinia between the 15th and 17th centuries.
In-depth historical research has made it possible to focus the exhibition choice on religious, magical and witchcraft ritual objects that emotionally involve the visitor and introduce him to the world of popular beliefs and the most terrible curses.
Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Inquisition and includes a collection of instruments of torture, used for centuries on thousands of innocent people, accused of witchcraft and evil.
The Sa Bovida Spanish Prison is part of the articulated museum system of Aritzo called: 'Ecomuseum of the Sardinian Mountain or Gennargentu', together with 'Casa Devilla', the 'Ethnographic Museum', the 'Mura Museum' and various historical and naturalistic itineraries, such as that of the ancient Neviere of 'Funtana Cugna'.
Why it's important to visit it
The suggestive rooms of the old Spanish prisons revive the dramatic conditions of the prisoners, at a time when the prisoner lived in absolute deprivation of any human right. The guided tour allows you to deepen your knowledge of the ancient stories and stories of devils and witches in a crescent of magic, charm and mystery.
