In the analysis of the testimonies of neo-medieval architecture, according to a concept of revival from the past, it is possible to realize their widespread presence throughout Sardinia, in even isolated places, in relation to the most diverse types that embrace religious buildings, public and private civil buildings, industrial buildings, funerary monuments.
In the study of the various architectural phases, it almost seems that Sardinia has removed an entire period of its history, even if then everything must be placed in the more general disinterest in the architecture of the last two centuries, with the exception of that of Gaetano Cima.
Compared to the others, the Neo-Gothic style has a decidedly large space and at least initially, under various circumstances, it counts on foreign or non-Sardinian clients: this is the case of one of the most significant buildings, the Palazzo Giordano Apostoli, built in Sassari since 1878 to a design by Giuseppe Pasquale and Luigi Fasoli for a wealthy entrepreneur who wanted not only the building but also the furniture and interior decorations inspired by stylistic criteria.
This is the first and most visible of the neo-Gothic buildings, both because of the privileged position in the new square of Italy, and because of the “flowery” interpretation of the style that undergoes some contamination: if the three-lobed mullioned and monophorous openings of the façade are canonical, the ashlar base and the columns that hold the balcony are courtly inserts that are completed with the meticulous attention to detail both outside and inside.
The references to the bronze dragons on the sides of the portal or the railings on the ground floor are worth it, or to the rich pictorial decoration created by Guglielmo Bilancioni with mythological subjects that in some way become the counterpart of the paintings inspired by the homeland glories of Sardinia, executed by Giuseppe Sciuti in the hall of the Palazzo della Provincia.
