Our Lady of Remedy

Our Lady of Remedy

The Sanctuary of the Remedy is a religious building located in Orosei, at the entrance to the town. Built in the 16th century, it was expanded and modified at the end of the 19th century. The sanctuary, surrounded by numerous cumbessias, is a seat of prayer and community life during the homonymous novena that takes place every year in the month of September. The festival in honor of Our Lady of Remedy takes place on the second Sunday of September, preceded by the novena.

In the town of the Barony, Our Lady of Remedy is the object of profound veneration, as evidenced by the many ex-vota preserved in the sanctuary. The religious building, once in the open countryside, has now been reached by the village.

The strong popular devotion to Our Lady of Remedy is well documented by the numerous invocations addressed to her by the character of Efix in the Deleddian novel Rods in the Wind (1913):

[...] seven prayers to and to Our Lady of Remedy, blessed be she, here is over there in the extreme blue of dusk the church and the enclosure of huts quiet like a prehistoric village abandoned for centuries.

[...]

Jesus save us, Our Lady of the Remedy thinks of us...

[...]

- Lord, pray to Christ, pray to Our Lady of the Remedy - Efix sighed - Leave me, command Pottoi. Pray to Christ, pray to Our Lady of the Remedy...

The feast of Our Lady of Remedy takes place in various places in Sardinia, such as Giba and Tinnura. In Oristano there is one of the best-known sanctuaries dedicated to Our Lady of Remedy. Here the religious celebrations begin with the novena and experience their climax on September 8, when Masses follow one another without interruption.
