The museum, inaugurated in 2006 and adjacent to the Tofet area, exhibits archaeological finds from both the town of Sant'Antioco and from other places in Sulcis. Accompanied by educational panels, the exhibition illustrates the various phases of the settlement on the site from the first signs of attendance in prehistoric times. The ancient Phoenician Punic city of Sulky, reproposed in a reconstructive model, is represented through the very rich materials from excavations carried out in various sectors of the town: objects of use, architectural elements, Punic and Roman funerary equipment. The ceramics are remarkable, both those used such as cups, plates, amphorae, lamps, and the ritual ones, essentially jugs with mushroom or bilobed rim. The jewels are of fine workmanship, often gold, such as digital rings and ridges, earrings and necklaces; numerous charms in bone, metal, vitreous paste and stone. Particular emphasis is given to the Punic tomb in Via Belvedere: it is in fact the oldest Punic tomb found in Sant'Antioco. The tofet is represented by a stratigraphic panel and an exhibition of steles and cinerary urns.
Of great interest are the reproductions of Phoenician and Punic warships and transport ships.
Why it's important to visit it
The visit completes an archaeological journey that includes the tofet and the necropolis and illustrates the history of an important and ancient urban center. Among the highlights of the museum collection are the golden ring decorated with ribbons and enamels from the 4th century BC and the perfume jar depicting the god Nile (6th century BC).
