Palau, Tomb of Li Mizzani Giants

Palau, Tomb of Li Mizzani Giants

Palau, Tomb of Li Mizzani Giants

The monument stands on a short plateau dominated by the heights of Monte Cau, a few kilometers from the sea, in northern Gallura.
The tomb, small in size, is built using a row technique.
The grave body, facing E (lungh. m 7.25), contains a rectangular funeral corridor (long. cm 6.10; width. m 0.90/1.00; height. m 0.65) closed at the bottom by a single arch-shaped headboard plate (width. m 1.02; height. m 0.95).
The exedra is preserved only in part (rope m 12.76; arrow m 3.75): the hemicycle is delimited by small orthostatic plates, at the base of which a low count-seat develops (width). m 0.35; alt. m 0.25), also incomplete, intended to accept offers.
The rear wall of the exedra connects seamlessly with the grave body.
At the center of the exedra is the monolithic stele (width. m 1.55; height. cm 2.80; thick. m 0.25), small in size compared to the examples documented in other Gallura tombs and without the hunched sheet music.
The monolith rests, without foundations, on one side on a flat stone and on the other directly on the ground. The entrance door, semicircular (width. m 0.55; height. m 0.66), has an unusual element, probably due to an error by the builders: the accurate chamfering of the perimeter profile of the inner face; this processing is instead usually reserved for the outer face.
The fragmentary materials that came from the D. side of the exedra (pans, pots, vases with applied plastic cords, fairing cups) date back to recent Bronze.

History of the excavations
It was excavated in 1966 by Editta Castaldi. The excavation involved what was left of the structure after its demolition, which took place in 1918 to reuse the lithic material in the construction of the nearby Li Mizzani stadium.

How to get
There From Olbia, near the Isola Bianca seaport, take the SS 125 in the direction of Santa Teresa Gallura. You cross Arzachena and continue to the intersection with Palau but, instead of turning to SP 123, you turn downhill and enter the SS 133 for Santa Teresa. Once you reach the height of a restaurant, turn left on a small paved road to follow until you find a fork to the south. Continue for about 4.5 km until you reach an open space where you turn right down the road following the signs for the grave. You leave the car a little further in an open space and continue on foot past a wooden gate. The tomb is located a few meters from the gate south of the path, inside an enclosure of wooden poles.
