Michelangelo Pira, a key figure in the Sardinian culture of the late twentieth century, is one of the first and most committed scholars of the Sardinian language and its problems, moved not by an occasional interest but by a deep bond with the culture of his land.
He was born in Bitti in 1928. He grew up in Oschiri and completed his secondary studies in Sassari. He graduated in Literature in Cagliari (with a thesis on the Bitti dialect) and there he worked as an official of the Regional Council and then professor of Cultural Anthropology at the city university. Author of plays, he deals with poetry and curates numerous broadcasts on Radio Sardegna, in which Bitti's Sardinian speaks with great strength and elegance at the same time. In his work “Sardinia between two languages” (also the title of a successful radio series) he outlines the problems of bilingualism and diglossia that sees the Sardinian increasingly marginalized. In “The Revolt of the Object” he insists on the concept of the revolution necessary for the Sardinian people, until now a passive 'object' of short-sighted studies and policies, to learn to become a 'subject' and to self-determine. In the story “The Electronic Village” he has the incredible intuition of a future characterized by global telematic networks.
