Las Plassas, Muda Museum

Las Plassas, Muda Museum

The museum addresses the general public, leaving the narrow limits of specialized communication addressed to historians and experts in the sector to activate a compelling reflection on the Middle Ages in Sardinia and the Mediterranean, through the use of new technologies that make the cognitive journey of rediscovering history immersive. It is divided into a series of environments equipped with multimedia technologies that immerse visitors in the suggestions of medieval Arborense life.
The most significant finds from the castle are told in the first person through an interactive audio guide. Thanks to these finds (an epigraph, a figurative ashlar, local, Italic and Iberian ceramics, bone play objects and metal objects, war or construction objects), the visitor explores the space, relationships and functions of the castle. The exhibits are contained in transparent cylindrical displays, an “archaeological theater” where form, function, origin and use mark the journey that returns the object to its context of origin; a tactile experience is possible thanks to faithful reproductions of the objects. Through films, on screens in the cylindrical display, a sort of continuous modernization is created with the total involvement of the visitor in a complete perceptual experience. These films tell how these objects from everyday life in the castle and in the village were manufactured, traded and used. The visitor thus takes a real immersive journey into the Arborense Middle Ages.
A fiction tells the arrival of King Mariano IV in Las Plassas and the banquet in his honor: it immerses us in one of the most exciting moments in our history. The audio guide then accompanies the visitor to the ruins of the castle.
The MuDA was created in scientific agreement with the Institute for the History of Mediterranean Europe of the CNR. Built in a nineteenth-century Campidanese house (Casa Diana), it was designed by the scientific team composed of the historian Giovanni Serreli (ISEM CNR) and the archaeologists Giorgio Franco Murru and Gabriella Uccheddu (who make up the current Documentation and Communication Center) and by the archaeologist Francesca Carrada. The multimedia direction is by Francesco Casu and the design is by Oindo Merone. The original music is by Romeo Scaccia. The whole country participated in the production, in particular the Sardisca re-enactment company from Las Plassas, the Medieval weapons company from Sanluri and the medieval music group Atziganos from Las Plassas.

Why it is important to visit it
Through new multimedia technologies, it is possible to take an immersive and multisensory journey into aspects of daily life in a medieval castle in the Kingdom of Arborea.
