The museum is home to an impressive 12th century military fortress, built by the Doria family, as the strategic stronghold of the Genoese defense system on the island.
The museum collection, dedicated to artisanal products made by interweaving vegetable fibers from the entire Mediterranean area, is configured as a real documentation center.
The itinerary is divided into nine rooms spread over two floors. Downstairs there are rooms dedicated mainly to processing techniques, while on the upper floor there are rooms dedicated to areas of use.
In the museum, mainly, splendid pieces of Castelsardo's popular basketwork are exhibited, such as corbule, baskets, sieves and sieves.
Special space is also reserved for artifacts made by intertwining vegetable fibers from Sardinia itself and used for the uses of daily life, the preservation of agricultural products, small livestock, fishing and trade up to the magical-religious sphere, with objects and furnishings of particular interest.
Among the most suggestive routes are the restoration of the medieval sentinelle walkway, which connected the castle with the ancient convent of San Martino, and the reuse of the drawbridge after the restoration of the Manganella Bastions.
Why it's important to visit it
The museum is unique in its kind, for the vastness of the exhibition, for the peculiarity of the museum itinerary that takes place inside a fortress and for the splendid panoramic view that can be enjoyed from the stands. The highlight of the collection is “su fassoi”, a boat made by weaving lake rushes with marsh hay and cane nails, used by the fishermen of the Cabras and Santa Giusta ponds.
