Conservative rehabilitation and functional recovery of the Santa Barbara church in Capoterra (CUP E47B22000510004)
The church, built in Romanesque style in 1281, is located near the town of Poggio dei Pini.
The building, built on a hill, would correspond, according to legend, to the place of martyrdom where the saint was beheaded.
The building, currently located in a residential context with attached buildings that constitute a small village, falls within valuable landscape areas subject to protection. The original core of the building, with a single rectangular nave, made of sandstone and limestone blocks, has undergone several interventions over time that have partially modified its external structure and internal distribution
.With the PNRR contribution, a series of works were carried out aimed at preserving the property over time (new flooring; rehabilitation of the masonry from rising humidity, where it degraded strongly; use of eco-friendly and sustainable materials such as wood and local stone; provision of home automation systems and LED lighting for a significant reduction in electricity consumption; remote video surveillance system).
The project also involves the creation of a dedicated website with historical, cultural and environmental content, the creation of signs to reach the site, the inclusion of the site in the territorial dissemination network for the scheduled guided tour and of cycle and pedestrian routes that are already active, with the possibility of visiting “sa scabitzada”, a spring a few hundred meters from the church where Santa Barbara is said to have been beheaded.
