Welcome Lobina

Welcome Lobina

Benvenuto Lobina is one of the greatest exponents of twentieth-century poetry and prose in the Sardinian language, a central reference point for cultural identity policies and strategies.
He was born in Villanovatulo, a town in south-central Sardinia, in 1914. He is a municipal and postal employee in Cagliari, then in Sassari. He fought in the war in Ethiopia, he developed a self-taught culture, approaching the Futurist movement. Since 1933 he has been collaborating with various literary magazines, including “S'Ischiglia”. It translates Spanish-American authors into Sardinian. His important works are the collection of verses 'Desperate Earth' and the novel 'Po Cantu Biddanoa'. Lobina's lyrics came out in Milan in 1974 in the midst of a “neo-sardist” cultural climate. Lobina expresses herself in the familiar language of her native country, only regulated in her handwriting and with some cultured lexical input. It scarves the word and embodies an epic feeling of belonging to the Sardinian people, not idealized, those who have suffered the upheavals of history, both large and small. The novel “Po Cantu Biddanoa” (1974) focuses on the same theme, which outlines the microhistory of a Sardinian village within the great currents of history. Lobina died in 1993, leaving a great void in the literary world of the Sardinian language that, unfortunately, has not yet been filled.
