The feast of Our Lady of Sos Regnos Altos takes place annually in Bosa on Saturday and Sunday of the second week of September. The festive event commemorates the discovery, which took place in 1847, according to tradition by a child, of a wooden statuette of the Virgin in the ruins of the Malaspina castle, which from the top of the hill of Serravalle dominates, since the eleventh century, the picturesque village crossed by the Temo.
Since then, the statuette has been kept in the church located within the walls of the castle.
In the first decades of the century, all the celebrations took place inside the fortress. The echo of the gosi (religious lauds, of semi-popular origin in the Sardinian language) sung by the faithful in the castle's parade ground filled the air, resounding throughout the historic district of Sa Costa, of late medieval origin. All its streets unravel and intertwine following the altitude of the hill of Serravalle. Most of the buildings, in red trachyte or pastel colors, are oriented to the north and have a room on each floor. The lintels of the entrances arouse interest; the oldest example dated 1580.
On the occasion of the party, the whole district of Sa Costa dresses up to the party. A few days earlier, the men decorated the street with branches, canes and flags. In the natural spaces or caves that abound in the district, the women, on the other hand, set up sos altarittos: small altars housing statuettes of the Virgin, adorned with flowers, fine fabrics and lace embroidered with the filet technique, of which Bosa is the primacy.
The Saturday procession is accompanied by the brotherhood of the faithful and follows an intricate path between the castle of Serravalle to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. On Sunday, however, we follow the opposite path, to bring the Little Madonna back to the church at the top of the hill, where she is kept. In the square of arms of the castle, the solemn Mass is celebrated, with the concluding prayer of the consecration of Bosa and its inhabitants to the Virgin.
During the above-mentioned processions, a stop is made at all the altarittos, to pay homage to every effigy of Our Lady.
The Bosana festival described above is an event that attracts increasing participation from year to year not only by Bosani people, but also by many tourists.
Religious devotion is not separated from the abundance of food, with tables where Malvasia di Bosa, an excellent oenological product, and typical preparations, such as fava beans and lard (fae a landinu), s'azzada (lamb legs in jelly), snails, etc. In addition to sos costàggios (the inhabitants of Sa Costa) who invite relatives and acquaintances to consume these foods, outdoor sales of wine and products are also prepared for the occasion typical gastronomic.
