It is celebrated in Cagliari on June 8 and in Gesturi on the first Sunday of August with numerous religious events that testify to the popular devotion directed to the humble little brother who was proclaimed blessed in 1999, but venerated since his life.
Born in Gesturi on August 5, 1882, Giovanni Medda belonged to a family with humble social conditions, but was honest and profoundly religious. Until the age of 29, he practiced the profession of peasant, while leading a life aimed at virtue and sanctification and aspiring to priestly life. In March 1911 he entered the convent of Sant'Antonio in Cagliari and, after two years, on 30 October 1913, he wore the cappuccino dress taking the name of Fra' Nicola. He continued his novitiate in Sanluri and in 1919 he made his solemn profession of vows. Later he worked in the convent of Sassari as a cook, then in Oristano and again in Sanluri. On 25 January 1924, he was sent to the convent of Cagliari, where he remained until his death as a questioner. For 34 years he carried out this humble task, walking through the city streets to ask for charity in the name of Saint Francis. The Cagliaritans, after a short time, understanding the exceptional nature of this friar, spontaneously donated offers in cash or in kind. Over the years, his figure became very popular in Cagliari and in neighboring countries, so much so that many people approached him to ask for advice, prayers, to give comfort to the sick. The occurrence of sudden healings increased his fame. He died on June 8, 1958 and was buried in the Bonaria cemetery in Cagliari, where his grave immediately became a destination for continuous pilgrimages.
In 1966, the process aimed at his beatification began. On June 6, 1980, his remains were transferred and buried in the Chapel of the Immaculate Convent of the Church of St. Anthony of the Capuchin Monastery in Cagliari. On October 3, 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed him “blessed”. Its liturgical celebration is June 8
