Sassari, City Museum - “Palazzo di Città”

The Palazzo di Città offers an exhibition itinerary divided into two sections: the west wing and the east wing, accessible respectively from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Sebastiano Satta.
The west wing houses on the ground floor the “Memory and Identity” room, which offers an immediate representation of places, memory and city identity, and the “Form and Image” room, which offers the graphic representation of the urban nucleus within the walls and a collection of nineteenth-century photographic images.
After passing the foyer, there is access to the theater space. The room has a horseshoe-shaped plan and a sequence of boxes arranged on three levels concluded by the loggia.
From the ground floor, through the monumental staircase, there is access to the representative rooms, among which the “Intregu” room stands out. Here, the homage ceremony of the Guilds to the Authorities takes place on the occasion of the Candlesticks' Faradda on August 14. On the upper floors there is an educational room and the room dedicated to the Candlesticks, while, in the attic rooms, supported by the original wooden beams, there is the clock mechanism dated 1867.
The east wing houses the City's History Documentation Center. On the two upper floors there is space for installations on the theme of traditional clothing in everyday life between city and countryside. The first floor offers reproductions of the clothes of the urban affluent class of the early twenties of the nineteenth century, together with watercolors by Giuseppe Cominotti (1792 - 1833) that illustrate them. In the same room there are reproductions of silver buttons and ornaments made by local artisans. The second floor houses forms of clothing for adult commoners, children and women who practiced humble crafts and small businesses. On the third floor, there is a museum itinerary, “Sacred and Profane”, divided into two sections dedicated to city religion, with particular reference to the rites of Holy Week and to the typically popular expressions of the festival, such as Carnival. The two aspects are well represented in the room by the works of Eugenio Tavolara (1901-1963) with the procession of the “Procession of the Mysteries” (1928) and the “Sassari Masquerade” (1937).

Why is it important to visit it
The Palazzo di Città, as a privileged place of representation and protection of memory and identity, is the heart of the municipality of Sassari. It is also home to the first civic theater built on the island, whose valuable architectural forms date back to the neoclassical refoundation.
