A New Awareness

In the eighties and nineties of the last century, awareness grew on the island that the Sardinian language is a wealth to be safeguarded. Beyond the sensitivity to the traditional world, the desire to let the island's language of historical continuity enter even in more modern and current environments is affirmed.
Thus, the need for a new Sardinian literature was born that, together with the defense of the most authentic expressions of ethnic identity, sounds and discovers new modes of expression. One of these is the prose of stories and novels that, starting from the eighties, have multiplied according to an inexhaustible trend line.
Poetry, after the great tests of the twentieth century, is in any case always an area in which writers in the Sardinian language find a way to express their creativity. The publications follow one another and are very numerous. Literary prizes are multiplying and spreading all over the island. The written poem seems to experience a moment of great pride.
Instead, improvised oral poetry, what in Sardinian is called “a bolu”, has come into crisis. With the progressive retirement of the great 'cantadores' who had delighted entire generations of Sardinians in the squares, the current landscape has become poorer. Financial interventions to support the Sardinian language and culture have produced a general growth in the sector, even if not always homogeneous.
Following the approval of State Law No. 482, interest in the use of Sardinian as an administrative and official language was also born and strengthened.
