Guspini, Murgia House

Guspini, Murgia House

Guspini, Murgia House

Casa Murgia is part of the more articulated “Domus Guspini” itinerary, an itinerary that, winding through the streets of the historic center, covers five sites as many places of valorization and promotion of the material and intangible culture of the territory. In fact, each house is dedicated to a particular area: the processing of iron in the Casa Agus, the production of wool, cheese, honey and nougat in the Houses in Corte, the wheat products in the Garau mill and, finally, a diachronic and multimedia journey on local history in the characteristic MonteTempo (formerly Montegranatico). Along the way, you can come across other places of interest, such as the mitza di Santa Maria, the churches of Santa Maria di Malta and San Nicola di Mira, Ancient Mascalcia, up to the columnar basalts, declared a natural monument.
Casa Murgia, acquired by the Municipality of Guspini through the testamentary legacy of the last heir, Caterina, is a Campidanese-style court structure. The museum layout covers two events in parallel: that of the owners' family, rich landowners (Ignazio Murgia and Anniva Garau; their children Eugenio, Antonio, Egidio and Caterina), and that of the Guspinese community, through the illustration of traditional practices related to the cultivation of vines and olive trees.
On the ground floor, which has furnished the rooms of the dining room, the study (which was the head of the family Ignazio, a doctor by profession), and the kitchen, the story and the image of the owners are traced, even in public settings, through the testimonies of the community.
The first plan outlines the profile of the territory and the cycle of agricultural activities related to it, such as viticulture and olive growing, documented, following the succession of the seasons, by panels, films, cases with objects and dry food products, artifacts such as plows and large containers.
In the attic, the bedrooms are reconstructed: an overview of the family's most private and intimate memories up to the epilogue of their events, which marks the end of an era for the whole community.
Additional spaces of interest consist of the cellar, open to the tasting and purchase of the most prestigious wines produced in the area, and the garden, with a well, a watering hole and, a rather unusual fact, a bunker built by the owners during the Second World War, which can still be visited.

Because it is important to visit it,
Casa Murgia takes the visitor into the daily life of an ancient family, made up of social and more intimate moments; the exhibition on agricultural activities, in particular viticultural and olive oil, offers the opportunity to see artifacts that it is increasingly rare to come across outside the contexts of cultural recovery.
