Galtellì, Ethnographic Museum sa Domo E' Marras

Galtellì, Ethnographic Museum sa Domo E' Marras

Galtellì, Ethnographic Museum sa Domo E' Marras

In the peripheral area, on an isolated basaltic spike, there is a characteristic 18th century noble palace that, despite the changes, has preserved the appearance of a real small castle with a crenellated turret. Here, on two levels, the museum is located. Inside, the various domestic and work environments are reconstructed. The individual rooms house the tools and machinery most representative of the Galtellina community, linked to the craft activities proper to the agro-pastoral world, recovered locally thanks to the collaboration of the population. The criterion chosen for the arrangement of the finds was for themes and crafts; this is how we find the reconstruction of a sheepfold, a winemaking cellar, a warehouse for supplies and the weaving room with the exhibition, on the floor and on the wall, of the products and some really important objects.
These include an ancient horizontal frame, from the 18th century, in juniper wood, a donkey mill, with a basalt tank, used until the forties of the last century, an ancient plow and, always in wood, a nineteenth-century pomace press. The part of the exhibition dedicated to traditional children's games is of significant interest. Exhibited here are, among others, “sa metracula”, wooden panels with iron rings, used by children during Holy Week to announce religious services, and small rifles built using marsh reeds.
The second floor of the house-museum proposes the reconstruction of the master rooms, with the exhibition of objects and pieces of furniture that reveal their family use. There are faithful reproductions of an antique living room, “sa domo de retzire”, of the master bedroom, the so-called “domo de nettu”, furnished with an antique wooden bed and the beautiful chests where the wedding equipment was kept and of the kitchen where the women, with skill, provided for the production of the typical “carasatu bread”.
The museum itinerary ends with an exhibition of traditional daily and festive clothing costumes, for men, women and children, among which an original wedding dress from the early twentieth century stands out.

Why it's important to visit it
The guided tour of the museum is an important stop because it allows you to delve into a journey through memory between work tools of yesteryear, objects of daily life and testimonies of rural life, the agro-pastoral world and the artisanal culture of Galtellì.
