Cagliari, City Palace

The Ancient City Palace is a historic building in Cagliari, a municipal seat from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, when a meeting of the City Council, chaired by the then Mayor Ottone Bacaredda, on December 14, 1896, decreed the transfer of the Municipality from the old to the new headquarters, still to be built on Via Roma. Some classrooms were placed on the upper floor for elementary school students, while the first floor housed the Pier Luigi da Palestrina Music Conservatory, until 1970, when it was moved to the current headquarters in Via Bacaredda.
After years of neglect, following careful restoration work, the Palace has been returned to the public and recently destined for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
The building also houses, on a permanent basis, three Civic Collections, the Manconi-Passino Ethnographic Fund, the Ingrao Ceramic Fund, the Ingrao Sacred Art Fund.

Why it is important to visit it
The Palace, besides having been the seat of the city's political power for several centuries, enjoys a privileged position within the historic Castello district: very close to the Cathedral and the Viceregio Palace, it shows in its structure the signs of Cagliari's history.
