Gairo, Monte Perda 'e Liana

Gairo, Monte Perda 'e Liana

Gairo, Monte Perda 'e Liana

Typical rock formation, called tacu or tònneri in the local dialect, and constitutes in Ogliastra the most important evidence of erosion of the ancient limestone cover of Giurese and its substrate.
It has a composite profile: at the top, a majestic cylindrical limestone-dolomitic tower, whose sub-vertical walls appear divided into regular prismatic blocks due to the orthogonal arrangement of the fracture lines (h 50 m, diameter 100 m); at the base, a truncated conical conglomerate-arenaceous formation, the lower end of the Mesozoic series, is superimposed on the base, consisting of the compact socket of Paleozoic schist (1100-1190 m above sea level).
Perda Liana (or Perda Iliana) is inserted in a landscape of the most extraordinary and wild and is a point of reference visible from a great distance.
La Perda represents the northernmost offshoot of the Tònneri plateau, from which it is just 2 km away and which is connected with the saddle of S'Arcu 'e su Pirastu Trottu (about 1,000 m above sea level).
The surrounding Perda 'e Liana plateau is part of Gàiro's common civic land. Pasture was carried out there until recent times shortly before the interruption of the cutting of firewood, the main fuel for domestic heating in the area. As a result, tree vegetation, over the course of all previous years, has been very compromised.
The Perda Liana and Perdaliana variants of the name are also widespread, the last one used by Alberto Ferrero della Marmora (1789-1863). The term perda indicates an isolated rocky spike and liana refers by some to the Ilienses, the oldest ethnic layer that populated the interior of the island, but by others it is instead interpreted as the adjective “smooth” or polished (Miglior, 1987). However, it is not excluded that it derives from the word olioni (strawberry tree). Similar local toponyms are Perd’ ’e Lione, in the territory of Belvì, and Genna Oliana. In the Seii area, the word s'oliana means 'solatio'. To support the hypothesis of a plant origin of the ethymus, there are several toponyms of summits in the area that have a similar specification: Pizzu Lioni, Punta Sa Siligurgia, Pizzu 'e s' Ilixi, Pizzu Linnarbu, etc. Perhaps the simplest explanation is the one that brings it closer to Oliana, a variant reported by Alberto della Marmora of the toponym Oliena. After all, for those coming from S, the tower marks a direction and then an itinerary, in that direction. In support of the description, Alberto Ferrero della Marmora adds a drawing of the geological section of the Perda (cf. Itinerary..., Part I, p. 190), in which the truncated conical base appears rather bare of tree vegetation, not unlike its current appearance. The local fauna was rich in mouflons, vultures, mountain crows.
