Busachi, Museum of Traditional Costume and Linen

Busachi, Museum of Traditional Costume and Linen

Busachi, Museum of Traditional Costume and Linen

The Museum is located in the premises of the deconsecrated Church of St. Dominic (16th century) called “Cunventu” because it was part of the ancient Dominican monastery. The Church itself represents a unique element of great charm.
The Museum is divided into two sections, one dedicated to costumes and the other to the cultivation and processing of flax.
The museum itinerary unfolds starting from cultivation, to processing to obtain the fabrics needed for everyday life and for those dedicated to the party. In fact, the clothes that go through the various phases of life are exhibited, from the most important, ceremonial and festive moments, to the saddest ones such as mourning, to everyday costumes recognizable by their simplicity, to the costumes of babies and teenagers. Ancient artifacts in orbace and cloth, cotton and linen shirts, brocade, silk and velvet bodices woven exclusively by hand testify to the skill of Busachi women who have made manual craftsmanship an art, jealously guarded and handed down from generation to generation.
In addition, the exhibition presents the production process from the flax flower to the finished product, through all the processing phases.
The costumes are displayed in the nave and are divided into the following types:

  • ceremonial costumes, both male and female, worn exclusively for the wedding;
  • costumes for major holidays and those for smaller parties;
  • everyday costumes, recognizable by their simplicity;
  • the costumes worn during periods of mourning;
  • the costumes of babies and those of teenagers.

The side chapel and the sacristy are reserved for the linen section.
In addition to the raw material, in various processing phases, the section displays all the tools necessary for making the fabric: the wooden plow for preparing the soil, the sledgehammer and the gramola for beating and chipping the stems, the comb, the shell and the spindle, the reel and the hoop, the winder, the warping machine and the loom.
The Museum tour ends with the exhibition of various artifacts made entirely of local linen, some finely embroidered.

Why it is important to visit it
The museum allows you to retrace the 'journey' taken by linen, starting from its cultivation, passing through the various processing phases to the creation of fabrics and the packaging of wonderful traditional clothes. The museum of traditional costume and linen processing is located in Busachi, a town in the historic region of Barigadu, has a deep-rooted tradition relating to costumes, and is one of the few places in Sardinia where people continue to wear them in daily life.
