Giovanni Lilliu


Giovanni Lilliu, archaeologist, in addition to excavating the nuragic palace of Barumini, has contributed with his studies and his incessant activity of intelligent dissemination to making known and valued the Paleosardinian cultural heritage all over the world.
Born in Barumini in 1914, a student of Ugo Rellini at the Archaeological School of Rome, from 1943 to 1955 he worked in the Superintendency of Antiquities of Sardinia. Full professor of Sardinian Antiquities since 1955, he was Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Cagliari for twenty years. He is professor emeritus, and member of numerous scientific institutes, both Italian and foreign. He founded and directed the School of Specialization of Sardinian Studies at the University of Cagliari. Since 1990 he has been called, the only Sardinian, to be part of the Accademia dei Lincei. His numerous publications include “The civilization of the Sardinian people from the Neolithic Age to the Nuraghi Age” (Turin, 1963), “Sculptures of Nuragic Sardinia” (Cagliari, 1966), “The Nuragic Civilization” (Sassari, 1982), “Culture and Culture” (Sassari, 1995), “Art and Religion of Pre-Nuragic Sardinia” (Sassari, 1999). He had political experience as a regional councillor in the ranks of the Christian Democracy. In recent decades, he has always been active in defending the identity of Sardinia and, in particular, of the Sardinian language. In a famous essay from the Seventies he coined and defined the concept of the “Sardinian resistance constant”. In the volume “Sentidu de Liberdade” (2004) he collected his articles and essays “in limba”.
