The building, built between 1903 and 1905 to a design by engineer Ernesto Ravot, is a simple construction in the shape of a parallelepiped completed by a projecting frame that completely surrounds it. In the main façade there are three arched openings, a shape that is repeated on the frame at the central window.
Inside, you can see two rows of tubs separated by a wall, now completed by the intervention of two artists, Costantino Nivola and Maria Lai.
On the outside, on each side, two arches are visible, containing as many fountains created by the artists Luigi Veronesi and Guido Strazza.
Today's name of “The Fountain That Sounds” derives from Nivola's intervention consisting of a series of copper cups that channel water to the tanks, amplifying the sound. The Ulassai washhouse is part of one of the exhibition areas of the Diffuso Museum dedicated to Maria Lai.
