Teti, Nuragic Sanctuary of Abini

Teti, Nuragic Sanctuary of Abini

Teti, Nuragic Sanctuary of Abini

The village is located in an area rich in mastic and olive groves, along the Taloro River, in the Mandrolisai region, in the center of the island.
The sanctuary village of Abini is one of the most famous and important villages in Nuragic Sardinia.
It consists of numerous huts and a sacred well protected by a fence. The huts are mainly circular in plan. The roof of the rooms consisted of poles and branches; it is possible, however, that in smaller rooms the ceiling was obtained with protruding lithic plates.
Some huts have distinctive elements, such as the seat counter along the inner wall perimeter and the basin in a central position; others have returned copper waste, proving to be places where metal was melted.
In the well, without the vestibule and the access staircase, the circular mouth opens - as happens in the common wells located inside and near the Nuraghe - at the level of the decking. The well is connected to an elliptical courtyard, divided into two sectors by an eccentric straight partition with a large median opening. The access to the well was from the smaller sector that does not show any particular architectural characteristics, while the larger one is equipped with a counter and seat.
The smaller sector in turn communicates with a large enclosure shaped like three-quarters of an ellipse, also equipped with a counter and seat.
The entire building with its two courtyards covers an area of about 41 x 23 m. The absence in the well of traditional rooms of Nuragic Templar architecture, such as the atrium and the staircase, and the presence instead of other rooms equipped with a bank-seat, suggest that Abini was responsible for the sacred (or at least public) function not so much for the well as for the environments in which it was included.
Near the large enclosure, hidden in the wasteland or inserted in modern dry stone walls, you can see numerous square ashlars made of hammer-worked volcanite. Some of them show incisions and interlocking teeth, similar to those found in other Sardinian wells with an isodomous structure.
The large quantity of bronze objects returned from the excavations attest to the metallurgical skills acquired by local populations and the particularly important role of the sanctuary village, which attracted the populations of a vast territory.
The bronze material included everyday and cult objects: votive swords, daggers, bracelets, rings, and, above all, the famous figurines. These portray bidders, praying, darting archers and warriors with stocks and shields, caught in prayer and equipped with helmets surmounted by long horns and a flattened appendix curved forward. The most famous figures, however, remain those of demonic beings, where the multiplication of eyes, arms and shields express a mythical-religious conception that refers to hyperanthropic oriental figurines.

History of excavations
The site was excavated for the first time in 1865. The nineteenth-century findings significantly increased the collections of the archaeological museum of Cagliari. Subsequent excavations were conducted by Antonio Taramelli (1931) and Maria Ausilia Fadda (starting in 1981).
