Sorso, Church of San Pantaleo

Sorso, Church of San Pantaleo

Sorso, Church of San Pantaleo

The picturesque historic center of Sorso includes several architectural monuments of certain historical and artistic value, built between the end of the fifteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century. The church is located at the top of the main road, Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
The parish church of San Pantaleo, dedicated to the town's patron, was built in 1836 by Antonio Cano from Sassari in the space where the old parish church stood, whose materials he reused.
The façade was almost finished in June 1840 but the sudden death of the designer, three months later, caused work to slow down. The task of running the factory was entrusted to the Sassari architects Francesco Agnesa and Angelo Maria Piretto, but numerous interruptions and disputes characterized the continuation. Although not yet finished, the building was opened for worship in 1856.
The church is inspired by neoclassical canons. It has a central plan centered on a large hemispherical dome but with a slightly shorter transverse axis than the longitudinal axis, further extended by the deep apsidal presbytery. Four ellipsoidal cupolettes cover the rooms at the corners of the building while in the presbyterial compartment there is another hemispherical dome.
In addition to the spectacular interplay of the profiles of the domes and the bell tower, built only in 1899, the exterior is characterized by the sinuous pattern of the apses and the white two-level façade, punctuated by pilasters and crowned by a curvilinear nuisance. The niches house statues of the Apostles, of Cano himself, while in the niches inside the building there are stucco statues depicting the apostles made by Salvatore Demeglio and dated 1858. The San Pantaleo di Sorso is considered, despite some inconsistencies due to the troubled construction events, the greatest achievement of the Sassari architect friar.
