Siligo, Monte Sant'Antonio Complex

Siligo, Monte Sant'Antonio Complex

Siligo, Monte Sant'Antonio Complex

The archaeological area is located in the narrow northwestern saddle of Monte Sant'Antonio, in Logudoro, a region of northwestern Sardinia; it enjoys a wide visual domain over the valleys below.
The complex, consisting of numerous structures, is distributed around a well temple.
The temple is located between two isodom-type wall curtains with a platform in front: the first is curvilinear, the second, straight, is interrupted by a small niche and by the corridor leading to a tower. The structures are enclosed by a wall that - originating from the tower - connects a circular construction to the southeast (perhaps a tower-hut) with other structures that cannot be defined in plan, until it is reconnected with another tower similar to the first. On the southwest side, the site is defended by the cliff. The well preserves the circular chamber (diameter 4.80 m) with a raised threshold entrance (width 0.95 m) open to a paved area; a gap covers the entrance and, in half, the front of the building. The well compartment has, on the perfectly circular base rows, angular connections between two straight walls - made of blocks of white tuff - that adapt the circular plan to a quadrangular rise originally covered by a double-sloped roof. Several elements of the roof - of white tuff - have been found near the well: they are double-sloped blocks with a semicircular socket in the lower part and rectangular holes on the top, perhaps for the insertion of votive swords. The circular chamber is included in a trapezoidal building (width 8.00 m wide) of which only the left sector remains. The paved area in front of the well (m 15.30 x m 13.30) - partly damaged by mechanical means - is delimited on one side by the overhang and by a curtain wall and on the other by a curvilinear isodome wall - built with “T” basalt blocks - which rests on the rectilinear external structure of the well.
The paving consists of shale slabs, processed blocks of basalt and white tuff interspersed with flakes of the same material. A water runoff channel crosses the entire paved area ending at the threshold of the well: it is created from sixteen basalt blocks with a semicircular central socket and lateral drafts for cushioning.
At the sacred area there is a circular environment (outer diameter 8.00 m, inner diameter 5.60 m; height 1.70 m) built with regular rows of worked basalt boulders and equipped in the center with a circular hearth delimited by well-connected “tailed” ashlars.
Furthermore, two structures with a unique floor plan are particularly interesting: the first - made with well-worked basalt blocks - is rectangular elongated with opposing apses (length m 14.50; width m 4.60/2.50; height m 1.75) and has two entrances truncated on the southern side. The second, rectangular (length m 20.40/18; width m 6.00/4.00), is built in isodome technique with alternating rows of calcareous and basaltic ashlars and has four opposing entrances on the long sides. Along the perimeter of the wall, there is a bench-seat that is interrupted at a small cylindrical frame (width 0.42 m; height 0.32 m). Two ashlars remain from the upper part of the building, characterized by a unique decoration in relief and negative triangles.
A straight corridor connects the ceremonial area to the nuraghe: the corridor's masonry consists of large basic blocks overlapped by a couple of rows of smaller stones and shale slabs (current length 6.35 m; height 1.30 m).
The nuraghe (diameter 15 m; height 4.60 m), built on the rock outcrop, is built with gigantic basalt blocks superimposed with an oblique texture.
The complex has phases from the end of the Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age.

History of excavations
The site was excavated in the years 1988-1989 by Fulvia Lo Schiavo and Anna Sanna, following devastating episodes of vandalism.

How to get
There From the eastern outskirts of the town of Siligo, a municipal road goes up to the top of Monte Sant'Antonio; the route, rather rugged, is passable with off-road vehicles.
