The country church of San Giorgio is located on a volcanic rock, on the northern outskirts of the town. It stands near an impressive nuraghe, to which it gave its name.
The church, dedicated to the patron saint of Barcelona, entirely in red vulcanite, with Gothic-Catalan forms, dates back to the 15th century. The façade is characterized by a frieze with three-lobed arches, a beautiful rayed rose window and a portal with side columns surmounted by statues of Saints Peter and Paul and Saint George and the Dragon.
The interior, with a single aisle, is covered by a vaulted with Gothic arches set on finely carved paducci with finely carved floral and zoomorphic elements. The large presbytery was completed by the “Altarpiece of Saint George”, now kept in the parish church. The capitals inside, from a more recent period, are decorated with angels, dragons and rosettes.
A very recent restoration has plastered the entire building, with the exception of only the façade, and in particular the two sides, including buttresses, in an questionable yellow color. The façade has been damaged to an even greater extent, due to the removal of some of the original volcanite cantons and their compensation with new material.
