Fonni, Logomache Complex

Fonni, Logomache Complex

Fonni, Logomache Complex

The complex is located on flat terrain, in a dominant position towards O, in line with the Lochirioe nuraghe, located 200 m NW, in the Barbagia di Ollolai, region of central Sardinia.
The complex includes a nuraghe with an adjoining habitation and a megalithic structure.
The nuraghe adapts to a granite outcrop through differences in height in plant structures and rooms. It is a complex building consisting of a central tower and a bastion with three secondary towers connected by concave-convex wall curtains. The structures are largely soaring.
The walls are built at the base with large granite boulders that have just been drafted, placed in place without special care; the blocks become smaller, refined and arranged in regular rows in the highest parts of the walls.
The bastion (m 18.60 x 12; maximum remaining h m 2.60) is accessed through a monumental entrance in S, with a trumpeted and arched opening behind it that leads to a small courtyard.
On the walls of the courtyard, there are two stairways that lead to the chambers of the secondary overhanging towers: the room of the tower d., circular (diameter m 3), has a large niche with a fireplace, while that of the tower s., with a slightly flattened circular plan (diameter m 2.50/2.80), has a small subsidiary room.
A long curvilinear corridor connects the room of the left tower with the environment of the reflecting tower: the latter is rounded (current diameter 1.70 m), has a floor plan lowered by three steps compared to the level of the connecting corridor and is equipped with an elevated cabinet.
Very little remains of the keep, located in the center of the bastion, today (diameter 9.00 m; max. residual h 1.40 m). It is accessed through a trumped corridor, with a D-shaped niche, which leads to a squashed circular chamber (diameter 3.70/2.80 m); the surface of the room is expanded by two irregular niches in plan open respectively on the back wall and on the wall of the wall. In the room, as well as in the entrance passage, the remains of the ancient paved wall are preserved.
Around the nuraghe, due to its large area, there is a village of huts, mostly circular.
The nuraghe dates back to 1400-1000 BC.

History of excavations
The nuraghe was excavated in 1979-80 by Giovanni Lilliu.
