The museum is dedicated to the exhibition of archaeological finds from the municipality of Cabras on the Sinis Peninsula.
The pre-Nuragic and Nuragic period is documented by materials recovered with the excavation of the village of Cuccuru is Arrius, which has returned significant evidence starting from the Middle Neolithic period.
The historical age, on the other hand, is well represented by finds from the ancient city of Tharros, built by the Phoenicians on a pre-existing Nuragic village and expanded in an urban sense in the Punic and then Roman times.
The Phoenician-Punic materials on display come from the excavation of the city's artisanal district and from the tofet to which they bring back the urns and steles on display.
The museum itinerary is enriched by educational panels related to the temporary exhibition “In Piscosissimo Mari”.
From June 7, 2008, the room dedicated to the Wreck of Mal di Ventre was inaugurated and from March 22, 2014, the one relating to the statuary complex of Mont'e Prama.
Why it's important to visit it
The Cabras Museum, in particular, has a unique selection of male statues on display (sandstone limestone sculptures known as “The Giants of Mont'e Prama”). The statues, six in total (three boxers, two archers and a warrior), as well as four models of nuraghe, come from the archaeological site “Necropoli di Mont'e Prama”, which is located at the base of the hill of the same name, at a distance of about 2 km from the Cabras pond, along the road that leads from San Salvatore to Riola Sardo.
The museum also collects testimonies that allow us to reconstruct the history of the territory, in particular of Tharros, one of the oldest cities in Sardinia.
