Borore, Museum of Ritual Bread

Borore, Museum of Ritual Bread

Borore, Museum of Ritual Bread

The museum is currently closed and a possible reopening date is unknown.

The Borore Ritual Bread Museum was created with the intention of making known all the traditions related to this food so central to Mediterranean gastronomic culture. But the nutritional importance of bread is also reflected in the place of respect that is given to it on the occasion of holidays, with different productions from country to country, especially on the occasion of weddings, but also of other celebrations.
The Museum was opened to the public in June 2006 and already exhibits a large number of examples, more than 300.
The museum structure is surrounded by a pleasant garden with rich vegetation, in which there are structures that allow visitors to stop and even a small playground for children.
The itinerary is organized in four exhibition moments. In the Work Tools Room, there are tools for working the fields and for processing wheat and flour with which bread was once produced at home, but in many countries still today. In the Hall of Daily Breads, all those products for daily consumption in Sardinia are exhibited, which, despite not having the ritual and symbolic importance of holiday bread, are of primary importance due to their central position in the local diet. In the Hall of Breads of the Cycle of Life, the protagonists are those breads that traditionally accompanied the most important moments in human life, such as birth, marriage and death. Finally, the Bread Room of the cycle of the year highlights the productions that were traditionally brought to the table on the occasion of special moments of the agrarian year, such as New Year (the time of planting) or threshing or on the occasion of the patron saint festivities, which were often linked to the agricultural calendar.

Why it is important to visit it
The Borore Ritual Bread Museum wants to be a place in which to enjoy culture not only by bringing the visitor closer to cultural heritage, but by involving him and making him part of the traditional production process. This didactic approach ensures that greater and more focused attention is devoted to those intangible ethnoanthropological assets, such as bread and food in general, which have only recently risen to the rank of cultural assets worthy of protection.
