"The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art is temporarily closed. It is advisable to contact the structure in advance via email to check the possible reopening date."
It is located in the historic center of the city, near the cathedral, in the oratory of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the homonymous suppressed brotherhood founded in 1568 in the church of San Francesco was based. The museum, inaugurated on 30 June 2000, houses the liturgical treasure of the cathedral of Alghero and the other historic churches in the city. The museum collection is divided into six sections: silver, paintings, wooden sculptures, cabinetmaking, stone material and bronzes. Silver: the reliquary of the True Cross is of particular importance, a valuable work of Catalan extraction, forged by an unknown Alghero silversmith in 1500. A beautiful late-16th century styled cross, produced by a workshop in Zaragoza, is also particularly precious. Also noteworthy are a chalice with coral bezels and a filigree monstrance, seventeenth-century works due to Sicilian craftsmen. Cabinetmaking: the section includes a large baroque tabernacle in inlaid wood, coming from the church of San Giovanni Battista, a typical example of the austere cabinetmaking of the Capuchin Order. Wooden sculptures: this section houses several simulacra of saints and the Virgin, testifying to the cults and devotions that, over the centuries, have nourished the faith of the population of Alghero. The golden statue of Our Lady of Navigators, the work of an unknown 15th century Catalan carver, is of great interest. There are many testimonies of Sardinian and Neapolitan plastic from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century: among all, a gigantic Saint Michael the Archangel from the end of the 17th century stands out. Stone material and bronzes: a marble statue of Our Lady of Mercy testifies to the spread of late Ligurian manneristic culture in Sardinia, in the early 17th century. The bronze collection includes two bells, one of which, dating back to the fifteenth century, comes from the cathedral's bell tower. Paintings: the museum collection includes canvases dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The predella of the Annunciation altarpiece should be highlighted, coming from the Church of Hope, in the countryside of Alghero and attributed to a Catalan-educated painter who worked in the early 16th century. On the other hand, an unknown Sardinian architect from the beginning of the 17th century was assigned the Holy Family with Saint John. Remarkable is the cycle of paintings attributable to a Genoese painter of the mid-17th century who drew scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin from Rubens.
