The Conce Museum was built in one of the best preserved buildings dating back to 1700. On the ground floor there are the well, the press and the tanks where the skins were immersed. The tanning, coloring and washing phases on the first floor while on the upper floor the finishing phase from which the sole and cowhide were obtained, requested by Cagliari book binders.
The itinerary shows the processing techniques. The visitor can walk on the glass surface that covers the original tanks and identify himself with the hard daily toil of workers immersed in water and lime, intent on manipulating fresh leathers, to obtain the highest quality products that made, for almost a century, the town of Bosa the capital of tanneries in Italy, appreciated and sold in the Peninsula and abroad.
The old tanneries are a symbol of the proto-industrial archeology of Sardinia. The tanning tradition of Bosa dates back to ancient Rome. Rediscovered in the seventeenth century, it grew to become a thriving activity from the second nineteenth century to the entire first half of the twentieth century. Some buildings still stand along the left bank of the Temo, near the Ponte Vecchio; the row alignment of the factories is one of the most famous images of Bosa. Known by the name of Sas Conzas (the shells), there were up to 30 factories active in the golden age.
Gradually, the activity declined and then stopped in the second part of the 20th century due to the unsanitary nature of the production process and the miasms produced by processing, now incompatible with the city's new tourist vocation. The two-story buildings, built of red trachyte, have been converted in recent decades to house businesses and homes.
