The Museum is dedicated to the archaeological evidence of the Viddalba territory from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages.
The exhibition, accompanied by educational panels, includes ceramic and lithic materials from the Neolithic culture of Ozieri, and the eneolithic culture of Bonnanaro to which the finds from Monte San Giovanni refer.
The Nuragic civilization is represented by surface recovery and the village of San Leonardo; a remarkable bronze axe.
The Roman necropolis of San Leonardo has returned grave goods from the republican and imperial age (up to the 4th century AD) with jewelry in gold, silver, vitreous paste and above all the lithic steles, displayed in the moat, which were the sign of cremated tombs dated between the end of the first century BC and the first imperial age.
These rectangular or trapezoidal steles are decorated with a palm branch pattern that encloses the main anthropomorphic figure.
Imperial and late-imperial containers and medieval fragments also come from San Leonardo, while Punic, Roman and Renaissance coins come from the territory and from Monte San Giovanni.
In addition to the steles, in the moat, interesting pre- and protohistoric finds are placed in the moat, an open exhibition area: millstones, large vases and other artifacts; reconstructions of “enkytrismòs” tombs and stone boxes.
Why it's important to visit it
The museum is the only scientific cultural center in the lower Coghinas Valley and collects significant traces of the Roman presence in the area. In addition, the exhibition is curated from an educational and scientific point of view in order to make the route easy to use even for a non-specialist audience. The highlight is represented by the approximately 80 funerary steles.
