Seui, S'Omu de sa Maja

S'omu de sa maja, a building that dates back to the end of 1600, houses the collections relating to the religious magical world and to the pre-Christian traditions of the Barbagia di Seulo.
The entire museum layout revolves around the historical figure of the witch Catalina Lay of Seui, tried with the autodaafe before the inquisitor judge of Sassari in 1583, and her tragic fate.
The traditional mask room: Sa Mamulada and its opposite Su Santrecoru, documents the remnants of phallophoriae in Sardinia, which reflect the cult of fertility already expressed in Greco-Roman myths.
The upper rooms are dedicated to the iconography of the cycle of life and death, starting from the myth of the parches (intent on spinning, weaving and severing the thread of destiny), and lead to the funeral room, set up with a bed, at whose bedside the prefices sing “Is Attittidusi” (funeral songs of the Sardinian tradition).
The ground floor of the museum, separated from the rest of the house, is occasionally used for laboratory or exhibition activities at certain times of the year.

Why is it important to visit it
A journey through the history of sixteenth-century Sardinia after the Inquisition, through the reconstruction of the tragic life of Catalina Lay, a midwife from Seui ('maista 'e partu'), arrested for witchcraft and tried in Sassari in 1593.
A journey into the dark world of ancient superstitions and religious magic formulas that accompanied natural medicines, together with the propitiatory rites that preceded and followed childbirth.
