Sagama, Church of San Gabriele Arcangelo

Sagama, Church of San Gabriele Arcangelo

Sagama, Church of San Gabriele Arcangelo

The church is located in the lower part of the town, probably replacing an older medieval building.
The church factory began in 1606 with a contract signed between the rector Anjoi and three Sassari “picapedrers” who undertook to build it according to the model of Saint James of Sassari.
The single-bay room has a barrel vault, with round arches and four side chapels that support the thrusts of the wide vault, together with the powerful buttresses leaning against the outer walls, according to widespread examples in the Sassari area. The presbytery is slightly narrower and lower than the height of the room.
The façade is set up on three orders marked by cornices, to which is added a curvilinear tympanum that merges into a single line with the wings below. The prospectus is encased in lateral pilasters terminated by pyramidal acrotera. Flanked on the left side is a stocky bell tower, on three levels, with marcapiano cornices and crowning with blackbirds around an “onion” fairing with toothed ribs, added at a later time.
Various elements allow you to appreciate the early adoption of manneristic modules radiated from the greater center of Northern Sardinia, including the exhibition of the entrance door with a triangular tympanum on grooved pilasters.

History of studies
The church is the subject of a brief summary in the volume by Francesca Segni Pulvirenti and Aldo Sari on late Gothic and Renaissance architecture (1994).
