Lower Palaeolithic

The history of human presence in Sardinia begins in the Lower Paleolithic, as witnessed by the discovery of stone objects dating between 450,000 and 120,000 years ago.

These are flint and quartzite objects from the northern region of Anglona, from the towns of Giuanne Malteddu, Interiscias, Laerru, Preideru and Rio Altana. These are about six hundred objects, including beaks, drills, scratchers, spikes, scrapers, which can be typologically framed in the lithic industries classified with the names of Clactonian and Tayazian. The expression lithic industry means the set of techniques and activities through which a human group transforms raw materials to obtain objects. Individuals belonging to the Homo erectus species probably produced this kind of artifacts

A further discovery that deserves to be reported is the one that occurred in the Nurighe cave of Cheremule, in the Logudoro. A complete human phalanx of the thumb with a proposed date of 250,000/300,000

years BC.
