Orani, Delitala Collection

Orani, Delitala Collection

Orani, Delitala Collection

The Collection is set up on the first floor of the restored former convent of the Observant Friars Minor, dating back to 1610. The building, which now houses the Town Hall, is located in the heart of the historic center, near the most significant monumental buildings in the country. The ancient church of San Giovanni Battista is attached to the convent, enriched with a beautiful choir, a valuable organ and a finely worked wooden pulpit.
The exhibition takes place along the walls of a gallery room and in the Council Chamber, which is dedicated to Mario Delitala, a native of Orani, one of the most important graphic designers of the Sardinian twentieth century, national engraver, painter, great innovator of island art (Orani 1887- Sassari 1990).
There are 66 graphic works: woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and two significant oil paintings donated by Delitala himself to the City of Orani on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
The interest in engraving and woodblock printing began in his youth, during his stay in Milan (1910-1911), where the artist took a higher course in lithographic drawing at the Book School, and was accentuated during his stay in Venice (1920-1923), when he attended the Free School of Engraving, under the guidance of Emanuele Brugnoli. The natural talent and direct knowledge of the great Italian and foreign engravers, in particular the Nordics, led the artist to a production of extraordinary quality, among the most appreciated and awarded of the time.
Among the works on display, alongside the portraits of the father and mother, there are the representations of a sacred nature, with a strong scenic impact and enhanced by the variety of the sign.
The scenes of village and peasant life, from the bomborombò dance to the pressing of grapes, open a window to the world of Sardinia. The engravings 'People of 1908', 'People of 1918', 'Heroes', 'People of 1938-Aratori', portray moments in the life of the Barbarian Sardinians, governed by an archaic unwritten code of honor.

Why it is important to visit it
Knowing the works of Mario Delitala means approaching a particularly happy season of island art, when Sardinian engravers strongly established themselves on the national art scene for their refined technical qualities and for the dramatic, lyrical and poetic intensity of their inspiration.
