Nuoro, Man - Art Museum of the Province of Nuoro

The MAN opened to the public in 1999 inside a building from the Twenties, formerly the headquarters of the Provincial Institution, located between the arteries of the historic center of Nuoro. Until 2003, it was included as an office within the cultural sector of the provincial administration. The first core of the collection comes from the merging of some public collections (Province, Municipality, Provincial Tourism Authority, Chamber of Commerce). The idea of a provincial art gallery soon found development in an updated museum project in which research and conservation work is accompanied by intense exhibition and laboratory activity. The collection is enriched with new acquisitions and the activity extends to the territorial context. In 2004, the museum acquired managerial autonomy, structuring itself as an institution without legal personality, and became part of AMACI, the National Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums. In 2013, MAN obtained regional recognition as a museum of excellence. The reorganization and development plan involves the opening of a new exhibition complex, created from the recovery of two historic buildings located in Piazza Sebastiano Satta, and the destination of the current headquarters where the permanent collection of the MAN permanent collection is the primary
activity of MAN are temporary exhibitions, to which the museum dedicates itself regularly, proposing itself as a place for research and communication of the most innovative phenomena of artistic production, within the framework of a dynamic cultural perspective in which local identity coexists and is strengthened in comparison with the entirety of the artistic circuit thanks to exchanges with other museums and new productions. In line with its mission, MAN offers exhibitions dedicated to artists and movements in the history of art from the 19th to the 21st century and experimental projects aimed at the languages of the strictest contemporaneity. The “extramuros” activity, carried out outside the architectural structures of the museum, complements the internal activity and is proposed as a form of openness to the territory and the operational involvement of local communities.
The MAN collection is the result of a careful selection of works by Sardinian artists from the end of the 19th century to the present day. A constantly growing corpus of about 600 works, which includes the most important authors in the history of Sardinian art, including Antonio Ballero, Giuseppe Biasi, Francesco Ciusa, Mario Delitala, Carmelo Floris, Maria Lai, Mauro Manca, Costantino Nivola and many others. The Collection also includes a significant collection of drawings and ceramics by Salvatore Fancello and the graphic work of Giovanni Pintori. Pending the completion of the expansion of the museum headquarters, the works of the MAN collection are visible in rotation within the exhibition spaces, rearranged from time to time according to different criteria, with paths both thematic and dedicated to individual personalities.
The education department of the MAN adopts methodologies that encourage the direct involvement of participants, stimulating the development of critical thinking and the growth of creative skills. From a multidisciplinary perspective, visiting itineraries are conceived as opportunities for knowledge and reflection on human history and the present through direct contact with the material products of visual culture, examined in relation to changes in society and the development of different languages. The educational workshops place the forms of modern and contemporary art at the center of operational activities aimed at stimulating reading and analysis faculties and at increasing manual and constructive skills.

Why it is important to visit it
The MAN regularly offers internationally important exhibitions dedicated to artists and movements in the history of art from the 19th to the 21st century, experimental projects aimed at contemporary languages and temporary installations from its Sardinian art collection.
