Macomer, Tamuli Archaeological Area

Macomer, Tamuli Archaeological Area

Macomer, Tamuli Archaeological Area

The archaeological area is located in a surveyed position, in the Marghine region, in central-northern Sardinia.
The complex, of particular grandeur and importance, includes three tombs of giants, a nuraghe and a village.
Tomb I has an elongated and apsidated tomb, including a burial chamber and a large semicircular exedra in front.
The grave body is oriented to SE (length 14.40 m; width 7.32/7.10 m), the semicircle of the exedra (rope 14.60 m; arrow 7.10 m) has a seat along the perimeter formed by 27 blocks, 14 in the left wing and 13 in the right wing.
At the center of the exedra, the entrance to the burial chamber is a slab pierced by the trapezoidal hatch, above a raised threshold.
The rectangular burial chamber (length 9.50 m; width 1.30 m) preserves, near the entrance, a single finely square orthostat, while the headplate is only partially preserved (width 1.41/1.40 m; height 0.92 m; thickness 0.26 m); it has frames in negative relief and, near the upper edges, two lowered triangles.
At the center of the exedra lies the toothed cone that overlooked the entrance plate, with a recess in the front face, four teeth alternating with three recesses and a short recess on the back side; in the area of the exedra and all around the tomb are the manger and numerous well-worked ashlars of different shapes.
Six conical betyls are arranged parallel to the s side of the tomb: the three largest (height 1.24/1.40 m) show two mammillary drafts.
Of Tomb II, also arranged in S/E, invaded by the collapse and the earth, it is possible to identify the profile of the apsidated tomb body and the exedra.
The grave body (length 11.40 m) - with an external profile delimited by a low crepidine - encloses the funeral corridor (length 8.20 m; width 0.85 m); this preserves the entrance threshold (length 1.20 m; width 1.54 m), raised by 0.10 m above the floor, and a well-worked wall plate in the open.
In the exedra hemicycle (width 14.50 m) there are some flat, polished stones that were part of the flooring of the inner burial chamber.
Tomb III, perhaps a dolmenic burial, is in a very poor state of preservation.
Oriented to SE, the burial (length 8 m) preserves, barely legible on the bottom, the burial chamber (length 2.20 m; width 1.75 m) with row walls and a headplate (length 1.35 m; width 1.05; height 0.41) flanked by two blocks of trachyte.
A short distance from the tombs of giants, on a rocky outcrop, stands the Nuraghe.
The monument, of a complex type, consists of a keep and a bilobed bastion leaning on the forehead (16.30 m x 12.50 m; height 2.15 m).
The keep, with a flattened circular plan (diameter 8.60/9.50 m; height 1.75 m) is accessed through an entrance, oriented to SE (height 1.05 m; width 0.75 m) and lintel, which leads to the rear entrance (width 1/0.90 m; height 1.60 m) now open air and interrupted after m 3.
The bastion probably contained two towers, one with an E and the other on the SO: the SO one has a quadrangular entrance (height 1.10 m; width 1.30 m) lintel and raised by 0.65 m; it leads to a corridor (width m 0.85; height m 2.00) that extends along the side for a length of about 6 meters until it reaches almost the height of the keep.
The town stretches a short distance from the Nuraghe, while a Nuragic source has been reported nearby.

History of excavations
Tomb I, known since the nineteenth century for the presence of the Bethles, was excavated in 1973 by Renato Loria.

How to get there
Macomer is easily accessible, due to its location near the SS 131, both from Sassari and from Oristano and Cagliari.
