Ittiri, Church of San Pietro

Ittiri, Church of San Pietro

Ittiri, Church of San Pietro

The parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli is documented for the first time in the account of the pastoral visit carried out by the Turritan archbishop Salvator Alepus in the year 1553.
In 1881, on a design by the architect Salvatore Calvia and with the help of the best Ichthyrian professionals, the demolition of the ancient façade, which was more backward, and the reconstruction of the current neoclassical vancorpus in red vulcanite began. The renovation of the church was completed fifteen years later in 1895. On September 26, 1896, as attested by a marble plaque inside the church, the Turritan archbishop Marongio Del Rio solemnly consecrated the main altar.
The church has a single apsed aisle, with five side chapels on each side, some Gothic, with a stellar vault, forming part of the original building (perhaps from the 15th century), others with a barrel vault. The apse has a beautiful stellar vault. The bell tower has a square lower part, and an octagonal upper part added later.
In the chapels of Christ, of Sant'Antonio and in the presbytery you can see wall paintings by the painter photographer Baldassarre Manca (Ittiri 1886-1930), while the chapel of San Narciso is decorated with a painting by Mario Paglietti.
Still in the chapel of Sant'Antonio, in the wall on which the altar rests, on the outside and in practice in the vegetable garden of the parish house, there is a small opening (now walled up) that leads to an underground crypt whose size is unknown.
Until 1835, he was buried mainly in this church or in the convent, rarely in that of Monserrato and Santa Croce.
In the years 1946-48, the interior floor was completely rebuilt with grit tiles, replacing the nineteenth-century one in octagonal blackboard bricks, combined with others of a square shape in white marble.
From inside the crypt, according to the testimony of Don Ignazio Carassino, it is possible to notice that the cruciform pillars of the church rest directly on the basement floor. In one of the many renovations, the church must have undergone a raising of the floor plan.
