The military airport complex is located inside a real “air citadel” that still maintains its symmetric and orderly layout, despite the transformations of use and the additions that have occurred over time.
The general plan is due to the Ferrara-based engineer Giorgio Gandini, active mainly in the thirties of the twentieth century, and is built on the shores of the Santa Gilla lagoon, not far from the current civil airport.
All the main buildings are interesting, each in different aspects, and all can be traced back to a unified concept that uses the architectural language of the Modern Movement.
The entrance is framed by an airplane-winged canopy, in front of the guard corps, which recalls the cult of the 'machine' of Futurism.
The Command Building, formerly a student school, has a curvilinear central body and wings at broken angles with regular, symmetrical windows.
The airmen's barracks incorporated a previous building, as can be deduced from the two slightly different side parts, and is spread over a long front, standing out above all for the central entrance that encloses a spectacular helical ramp.
The official club, located in a happy position in front of the pond, has its main front marked by an access staircase with a compass, once open and now shielded by windows: the interior still has the staircase and period furniture.
The service buildings (power plant and radio telegraph station) are also preserved almost completely. The larger of the two airfields, more than 100 m long, is called “Savigliano”, as it was built by the Società Nazionale delle Officine di Savigliano (Cuneo) on a prototype designed in 1933. It is a functional shelter for aircraft, made of steel, with pylons that slide the openings on both long sides to allow aircraft to enter and exit easily.
